The Point Is. .
Offers some insight to what’s going on at The Point
The traffic monitoring signs went up over Memorial Day weekend. One is on Cape Ave and one on Lighthouse Ave. They are the two most complained about streets for speeding.
The monitors record the speed of motion every two seconds as it happens My intention is to download the data once a week and publish the results on the web site. If a trend of speeding during any given time frame shows up, I will ask the police to stakeout the area during that time.
I still have to smile as bikers and joggers alike race at the sign to see how fast they can go. I can sit on my porch and hear a kid announce “I got up to 16 mph!!”
Albrecht and Huen shoveled off the entrances and did a good job for the most part. They have to come back and rediscover the deck on Stites. Apparently it was under so much sand that they thought it was part of the dune.
I picked up some four loads of drift wood. Bill Gibson sawed up the bigger pieces and carted them off to the tune of three or four pick-up trucks worth. Public Works picked-up the last BIG tree on the 1st. ANDDD Cape May’s beach cleaner upper did a FANTASTIC job sweeping up the rest of the trash, junk, bottles, etc.
The beach looks beauteous. Kudos and much thanks to everyone who helped clean up after that mid-April storm.
Thanks.
A new trend has cropped up. Some folks picking up after their dogs are leaving these “dirt bags” in trashcans that are close to the street. The trashcan owners express a wide range of surprise. Comments span the spectrum from “at least they pick up” to “WHAT IN THE $@$#& DO THESE - - - -“
Someone insist on intermittently leaving one of these bags on the doorstep of the post office. Wes says that he would love to show them where he prefers that they dispose of the bags.
Al I can say is that there is no law against it and people on both sides need to show consideration for others. Well yeah, Wes. Leaving it on the doorstep – “There oughta be a law!!”
People have had a lot to say over the incident at the lake, most half truths and misinformation. There was even an editorial in the Star and Wave where the editor failed to ask the proper people the right questions.
A group of first year college students decided to have a reunion and got stupid. They were reported to the police as they drug a bench down the street. The police apprehended them that night. I am told that they fessed up. One of the group’s parents owned the house that they were using.
The people whose property got trashed, and that includes the Borough, are asking for restitution. It is up to the police and the prosecutor and ultimately the judge what the sentence will be, if any, and NOT the Borough.
Preliminary Numbers
Commissioner Schupp and the county assessor got together and ran some numbers to see what Cape May Point ‘s school tax bill would be based on today’s figures. BOY ARE WE IN TROUBLE!!! If we got incorporated into Lower today, which seems to be our destiny, our school tax bill would be average $4,000 per household.
Lower’s school tax rate today is fifty some cents. Adding our housing inventory to Lower’s and refiguring the school tax rate, Cape May Point’s school tax rate would be forty-seven (47) cents. The Borough’s school tax bill would be approx $2,400,000. Compare this to our current school tax rate of one (count em = 1) cent. That means our school tax rate will go up 4,700%.
Lower will be getting their promised tax cut on our backs and at our expense. The State also seems ready to go back on their word that any part of the property tax can only go up 4%. This is the down side of being small with no representation. How do we get out of this chicken outfit??
Commissioner Schupp is on a campaign to meet with Messrs. Lobiando and vanDrew and school board superintendent. We are trying to get the League of Municipalities on our side.
Don’t forget these are preliminary figures. It’s too early to tell where this is going and how it will end up. Aint lookin good!!
