The Point Is. .
Offers some insight to what’s going on at The Point
There is some confusion going on about the dates for the Circle Party and Race Day, mainly because differing dates have been published.
According to Ann Brecker who hires the band, the Circle Party is on Saturday June 14th, the day before Father’s Day. Jim Smith who had run the race for decades says that Race Day is always the third Saturday of the month and that is June 21st.
The explanation also describes the problem. Typically, this two events fall on the same weekend. This year June 1st is a Sunday and Father’s Day (third Sunday of the month) is June 15th. The third Saturday is June 21st.
So, the correct dates are;
· Circle Party = June 14th
· Race Day = June 21st
Manned beaches this year are:
1. Lehigh
2. St. Pete’s
3. Cape (periodically – overflow from St. Pete’s
4. Pearl, and
5. Stites/Brainard
Beach tags will be required starting June 14th. All beaches will be manned by lifeguards on June 14th and 15th (Father’s Day Weekend). Only St.. Pete’s and Stites/Brainard will be manned from Monday (June 16th) through Friday (June20th) of that week.
Starting June 21st the Life Guards will maintain the regular summer schedule through Labor Day.
You will be seeing changes in the entrances in the coming year(s). Basically, they are a “work-in-progress”.
· The new Whilden entrance is complete and is a work of art. Thanks to the Beach Boys.
· The snow fence on the street side of Lehigh is to be redone in picket fence.
· Cape entrance has about ten to twelve feet of sand on it and is closed. We will reopen it when we can rebuild the entrance.
· Surf has been opened to foot traffic.
· The snow fence will be replaced by slit-rail fence on the beach side of Lehigh, St. Pete’s and Pearl .
We are looking for input about Stites, Brainard and Alexander from those who use those entrances and live with them.
Should we:
1. Do nothing, or
2. Enlarge the existing deck, or
3. Connect Stites and Brainard and build a deck in the middle, or
4. ????? – let us know
The activity is event driven and not calendar driven. That is to say, we start at the top of the list and work down. The next activity will started when the current job is finished. I believe that the Beach Boys are done for the summer. So, we look forward to the fall and next spring.
We have been asked about allowing golf carts on our streets. There is nothing in our ordinances; for or against. The police will enforce state and federal regulations that call for a street-ready vehicle, a licensed driver and liability insurance.
A street ready vehicle has safety belts, turn signals, speedometer, etc. The dealer that sells you the cart knows if it is street ready or not and can register it and give you a license plate.
Bids have been opened for the basketball court and the ADA construction of the firehouse. Both bids are over our budget and have been rejected.
The B-ball court and hoop came in between $10,000 and $13,000 depending on what option we picked. Not exactly what we had in mind. We do not expect to hold the NCAA tournament next year. The package will be reconsidered.
The firehouse came in over what the grant will cover. Our options are to increase the bond or re-bid. The bids will be rejected and we will sharpen our red pencils and see if we do without an item or two. This has to be done soon so that we can have it re-bid and material ordered and all of this gets done by Feb of 2009.
It case anyone has noticed the buoys marking our beach saver reefs are misplaced. We are working at correcting the situation.
