The Point Is. .

From Commissioner Nietubicz

Offers some insight to what’s going on at The Point

ELECTION DAY

Borough Election Day is May 13th.  All three Commissioners will be elected.  The three newly elected Commissioners will then elect the Mayor.  Mayor Fraser is retiring so we will have a new mayor.

Four people are running for the three positions.  They are,in alphabetical order:

1.               Linda Adams of Ocean Ave – Linda has been on the Zoning Board for fifteen years and is currently serving as Chairperson for the past two years.

2.               Joe Nietubicz of E. Lake Dr – Joe is currently the Commissioner of Public Safety and is seeking his second term.

3.               Carl Schupp of Oxford Ave – Carl is currently the Commissioner of Revenue and Finance and is seeking his third term.

4.               Anita van Heeswyk of Central Ave – Anita has been on the Planning Board for eleven years and served as Chairperson for ten of those years.

The polling place is Borough Hall.  Vote early and vote often.

State Dept of Education

The Department of Education has issued a 205-page Draft Accountability Regulations.

Most of the regulations deal with cost accountability and cost control, which is gratifying.  The one that concerns us directly says nothing new.  It says:

“Establish a countywide task force to provide advice on the consolidation of school district administrative services and the creation of consolidated school districts.”

As fearful as the last part of the last sentence is, it says “provide advice.”  We have the assurances of Commissioner Davey and Executive County Superintendent Crowley that we will not have an outrageous hike in school taxes.  I hope they have the authority to back it up.

Complete regulations are online at www.state.nj.us/education

Important Notice

There is some confusion going on about the dates for the Circle Party and Race Day, mainly because differing  dates have been published.

According to Ann Brecker who hires the band, the Circle Party is on Saturday June 14th, the day before Father’s Day.  Jim Smith who has run the race for decades says that Race Day is always the third Saturday of the month and that is June 21st.  The schedule published in the Taxpayer’s Newsletter has them both on June 14th and other published schedules say June 21st. They are half right and half wrong.

The explanation also describes the problem; day before Fathers Day and the third Saturday.  This year June 1st is a Sunday and Father’s Day (third Sunday of the month) is June 15th.  The third Saturday is June 21st.  Typically, they are the same Saturday – not this year.

So, the correct dates are;

·         Circle Party =  June 14th

·         Race Day = June 21st

New Era

May 13th is Election Day and the newly elected commissioners will be sworn in on May 20th.  Since Mayor Fraser is not running for re-election and Bill Gibson is now in charge of Public Works and John McGraw will be leaving us at the end of the year, we are looking at the beginning of a new era.  Whether it is good or bad, only time will tell.  It certainly will be different.

We can expect a year maybe two of transition.  You know – where do we buy the signs? – Oh!  Is that my job! – When was THAT due??  Trouble is the new Commissioners and the new Mayor will have to hit the ground running, learning while doing – sorta On-The Job Training.  Everybody concerned will need all the support that you can muster.
